A balancer is the best way to adapt unbalanced signals to balanced signals (connecting consumer equipment to professional equipment), reducing or eliminating the noise that can be induced in our audio signal.
The purpose of a balanced line is to transfer a signal from one place to another while rejecting noise. This is accomplished using two lines whose impedance relative to ground is the same. When the source output is an unbalanced signal (cameras, iPod, PC, etc.) to be transmitted over a long distance, the signal should be balanced to remove induced noise.
