An outdoor AV box is a connection box for audio, video, data or power built to live outdoors: pitch-side at a stadium, on a ship’s deck or in a building’s courtyard. Its protection rating, IP66, IP67 or IP68, tells you how well it withstands dust and water.

The IP code is defined by IEC 60529: the first digit is protection against dust and the second against water. IP66 is dust-tight and withstands powerful water jets; IP67 withstands temporary immersion (if it must also resist jets, a dual IP66/IP67 rating is specified); and IP68, continuous immersion under the conditions stated by the manufacturer.

Stainless steel or plastic

Stainless steel is the choice for the toughest places: stadiums, the coast and ships, where damp and salt attack connections. Standard boxes are AISI 304L stainless steel; for salty air they are built in AISI 316, which contains molybdenum and resists corrosion far better. There is also a lighter IP66 plastic (polycarbonate) version.

Where it goes

Pinanson builds outdoor boxes for surface mounting, recessed, on a pedestal and in the floor, rated IP66, IP67 or IP68 depending on what each site needs.

Real examples

The pitch-side connections at LaLiga stadiums sit in IP66 stainless steel boxes finished with each club’s logo and colours; the VAR boxes also have a pneumatic-closure lid. The Carnival Vista cruise ship used IP66 stainless boxes against the marine environment, and the Sports City Shooting Club in Egypt uses IP68 boxes with SMPTE 304 connectors angled at 30° for the cameras.

How to choose

  1. Where it goes: Wall, floor, pedestal or recessed; and whether it faces sun, salt or traffic.
  2. Material: Stainless steel (AISI 316 near salt) or lighter IP66 polycarbonate plastic.
  3. Rating: IP66 against rain and water jets; IP67 for temporary immersion; IP68 if it may stay submerged.
  4. Connectors: Audio, video, fibre, SMPTE 304, data or power, with protective caps.
  5. Ask for a quote: With your logo and colour if needed.
