The SMPTE 304 connector is used for signal transmission between the camera and its CCU (camera control unit) in broadcast and professional video systems.

With this solution, the fusion of the fiber inside the box is avoided, since, thanks to an intermediate panel inside the box (made of extruded aluminum) both kind of connections are made using double base type connectors.

Normally when the signal transmission is done through the SMPTE cable, the flexibility offered by the usual connectors that can be easily terminated by any fiber installer is missed since SMPTE connectors must be terminated by a certified installer that is not available in all installations.

Using this distribution box the user would only have to insert SMPTE 304 pre-connectorized short cables into the box that would be fixed on the front panel and at the other end finish the SMPTE 311 cable with LC or SC optical connectors as well as the connectors for copper placed on an intermediate panel. At the rear of the box would be the SMPTE 311 cable of the installation connected by cable glands and also connected to the intermediate panel at the other end.

The use of this type of solution is required by installers to avoid fiber fusion being this direct connection faster, handier and just as functional.
